I dislocated my thumb once and I have no idea how. Both thumbs hurt so I thought it was odd, but carried on for about a week. When I finally went to the doctor they said oh your thumb is broken. The hand doctor said well, if you had come to see me when you first did it I could have popped it back in place. I required surgery and a pin. Right thumb is "just arthritis". My new year's resolution was "don't do whatever I did to dislocate my thumb this year". Apparently it was just part of my routine day - maybe I tripped over my velcro dog and caught myself from falling with my thumbs/hands? Whatever it was, I have not done it again. I hope you feel better soon.

When I was 12, my friend and I were horsing around at the top of a staircase, and I went down. The pain was so bad that my mother took me for X-rays, and they said the sternum was cracked. It hurt for years after, but now I don't think about. Hoping your bruise heals quickly.

From a very young age, I wanted to have my appendix removed because Madeline does. Every time my stomach hurt I thought, is this it? Is this the moment?

And then, one day, when I was 19… it was. I feel like I manifested this hahahaha. It was very painful. But even now, looking back, there’s a tiny part of me that was glad. Plus I got to watch a lot of tv.

I also always wanted to break a bone but I would like the universe to know that I really really don’t want to anymore!!!

While I was in the ER one time, there were two friends/partners, probably college age. It turned out she had an unusual manifestation of appendicitis. From the tone of their voices, they sounded like it was all fun and games. Noobs!

But I also remember the allure of appendectomy and tonsillectomy fostered from literature.

When you’re as old as 80, that’s one of the first questions you’re asked in the doctor’s office. I’ve fallen several times off my e-bike but I do not tell them about it. Heaven only knows how that would affect my health insurance!

this comment is extremely high quality - cheryl and brooke, thank you both for being the kind of bike punks i can look up to! i broke my elbow in february biking on a big ol ice patch. i did ride before i got out of the sling, but only on the back of a tandem (no need for an elbow back there).

I broke my butt (coccyx) once, and you can literally do nothing about it, except sit on pillows for six weeks. It was a weird injury.

I bruised my coccyx slipping on stairs and found those airplane neck pillows were all I could sit on. Unfortunately I was also travelling and also had to brave a 6 hr bus ride and an 8 hour plane ride. Fun times! I don’t take my coccyx for granted anymore.

My mother dislocated her coccyx when she fell backwards off a sofa while adjusting a painting. She was 96 at the time and her daughters fussed at her, but she justified herself by pointing out she had removed the cushions. Like you, she sat on pillows for a while.

Unfortunately, I'm quite accident prone because of my disability. My last one was also the worst. I live in a basement apartment with its own entrance. I just went out to get the mail on top of the stairs in my PJs and Crocs. I slipped on the way downstairs, only fell 2 or 3 steps. But I landed very badly. It was immediately obvious that my ankle was broken badly (first broken bone for me) and I couldn't move at all. My phone was inside. I had to scream for help for more than half an hour, I was well concealed at the bottom of a staircase leading to a basement on private property. My ankle was broken in three places and I had three surgeries. One last one coming up next month to remove a plate and 13 screws. I always make sure to take my phone with me to get the mail now 😬

That's so scary! I've never bruised a bone before, but I've had a pinched nerve in my neck that affected my drawing hand – it's awful when everything looks fine but feels terrible. Hope you feel better sooner than later!!

I had my first broken bone(right wrist) when I was in my early 40’s. It happened at my son’s roller skating birthday party. I hit a piece of ice someone had thrown on the rink and heard a pop when I hit the floor. Life was pretty difficult with a cast and not fun! I hope you feel better soon and never break any bones.

I’m always (I fall a lot) so surprised about how much time there is to have thoughts while you fall. Thinking ‘oh no, I think I’m about the fall- yup definitely falling, I wonder if this will look silly and if there’s anyone seeing this’ must take several seconds to think, right?

I hope you feel better soon Brooke!

I do hope you feel better soon (and that you can keep the sneezing to a minimum). I worry about falling. I have fallen so many times in the past when I was younger they tell me that is why my knees are as bad off as they are now. I fell not long ago and dislocated my elbow (remember when you fall pull your arms in to your body....do not try to catch yourself). Having a cast is NOT fun as an adult.

I broke my wrist mowing my front lawn 20 years ago when my kids were small, my 4 year old daughter helped me do my bra up hoisted my boobs into the bra without an invitation to do so. My worst injury was falling down a concrete step and hitting the front of my calf my leg went black from the knee down and it was hugely embarrassing because it was at the local high school with lots of teenagers skulking around

I was in a bike accident that was my fault. I was going up the other end of an underpass, which was quite steep. I didn’t realize the biker in front of me had slowed down so much, and I rear ended her and went over my handlebars, hitting my chin. She rode away without a word to me (I think she was fine?) but I got 21 stitches in my chin. Fortunately I was right outside of student health and some kind stranger walked me in. If you’re going to be in an accident, I highly recommend doing it in front of a medical care center. At least I can use my scar to scare my kids into wearing a helmet now…
